Event reflection PRIDE alliance presentation of dirty computer
Wednesday during free period December 5th I attended the viewing and discussion of Janelle Monae's emotion picture of her latest album Dirty Computer. After the viewing of the short film we had a discussion about our thoughts, feelings, and reflections on what we felt about the film. To summarize the Film briefly fair warning it has spoilers, The story takes place in a dystopian future where people are referred to as “computers” and anyone different from the elite is labeled “dirty”. Jane 57821, played by Monáe, is taken in for “cleaning,” but refuses to give herself over to those in charge. Instead, they activate the Nevermind, allowing them full access to Jane’s memories, which play out like a series of loosely interconnected music videos. Monae was targeted as a human who needed her memories removed because her open relationship with her partner named Zen. It was really amazing the questions the guest speaker/ facilitator talked about. There was so many political statements and social justice presentations I missed watching the film. After the film a classmate and I got together and reflected on the topics that came up during the group discussions. Social Justice was the theme we both could connect to when watching the film. We had the conversation about how this was Monnae's way of being an activist. I never participated in marches or walkouts to support causes or social issues I feel that are important however on social media if I see a post about a change in the system we have or a ideology I can connect with I will share with family and friends, repost, or like the post and that is my way of activism. In this technology world social media platforms affect our youths lives and when we talk in class of creating a space where we can talk and reflect on social issues that need to change the internet is a space for this. Somethings it is abused by people expressing their views negatively or creating a place that steams from negative emotions however those places for the good I view as outweighing the negative and I have hope people like me can use the internet to educate themselves on current social injustices and really form a supporting view on it and mayne connect with others who also can become educated on these as well. Attached is a photo of my favorite sense that stood out to me in the film.
attached is an article that summarizes the themes in the film and illustrates why they are current social injustices in our country today.
